Gallium is a soft, silvery metal mainly used in electronics circuits, semiconductors and LEDs. The compound, gallium arsenide, can produce laser light directly from electricity and is used in solar panels, including those on the Mars Exploration Rover. Another compound, gallium nitride is widely used as a semi-conductor in Blu-ray technology, mobile phones and pressure sensors for touch switches.
Indium improves the strength, extensibility, corrosion resistance and tensile strength of the alloy which widely used as semiconductor and coating which applies to high-tech industry such as monitor of electronic devices, solar panel and aerospace technology. Indium also has a high potential of developing in oral surgery, except including Indium for making denture, Indium can also be used as one of the major material of tooth filling material due to its high strength and resistance to corrosion. Furthermore, it often replaces more toxic metals such as Cadmium and Lead to create safer operations.
Nickel is a common material used in the production of stainless steel. It helps to provide strength and corrosion resistance to the product. Nickel also has a heat resistant nature that allows it to sustain through high temperatures environment, for example on aeroplane and vehicles engines. The nickel compounds are also applied on both household and electrical cars’ use batteries.

Manganese has a durable property and is one of the most commonly found element on earth’s crust. Many alloys containing manganese are used in steel production, glass making, and even to make the aluminum in soda cans thinner and stronger. It is also used as an important alloy and used to deoxidize steel and desulfurize. On household appliances, it is also used in dry cell batteries and part of the black-brown pigment in paint.
Cobalt is mainly extracted as a by-product of copper and nickel. It is a popular commodity in the production of electric car’s battery, in particular rechargeable batteries. Apart from using as a super alloy in aircraft engines, and in cemented carbides that are uses in hard cutting surfaces, Cobalt is also used in external beam radiotherapy, for the sterilization of medical supplies and medical wastes.
Lead has a high density nature which makes it useful as a shield against X-ray and gamma-ray radiation and therefore is commonly used in X-ray machines and nuclear reactors. At the same time, it is also used as a covering on wires and cables to protect them from corrosion, as a material to absorb vibrations and sounds and in the manufacture of ammunition. Other common industrial uses of Lead include batteries, undersea cables and weights. Lead compounds also have their presence in household use, such as paint, ceramics, pipes and plumbing materials.
Copper has a strong electrical conductivity and has a wide range of household and industrial use. Copper can heat up and cool down at a fast speed which makes it a superior material used for heat exchange appliances, such as air conditioners and solar cells. The strong connectivity is also why it is commonly used on computer connections. Copper is also sometimes used on infection control units or care service units due to its antimicrobial feature.
Zinc has a flexible nature which makes them more commonly used on iron and galvanised steel. The coating can help stopping or delaying the rusting of steel or iron. Once the zinc coating is applied, the galvanised steel product can be used on cars, machine parts, electronics and buildings constructions. Other by-products of zinc include but are not limited to the creation of brass and bronze, production or rubber (zinc oxide), X-ray screen (zinc sulphide) and die casts (zinc alloys).
Tin is known for its use in the production of Solder, Utensils, Tin Roof and Tin Cans. With the Tin coating applied, it is a soft white material that protects the products from corrosion. Bolivia is one of the top producers of tin in the world. Some of the Tin compounds are used as anti-fouling paint for ships and boats, which helps prevent barnacles. A by-product of Tin is the niboium – tin alloy which is used for superconducting magnets.
Silver’s scare nature makes it a rare material with a high value in the market. Silver is most known for its use on jewelry and luxury products due to its non corrosion nature. It has a strong anti oxidation property which makes it commonly used on silverware and even industrial industry, such as those that require stable thermal and electrical conductivity
Gold is famous for being a precious metal that is primarily used on luxury products and currency due to its durable nature. Due to its value, Gold has been used as a benchmark for valuation of other materials. The component of Gold allows it to transmit electricity which does not tarnish. It may also be drawn and extracted into wire format and mix other metals that can be applied on electronic product production use, such as computers and smartphones. Gold is even used in space to reflect radiation and stabilize temperatures. The multi-purpose use of Gold makes it one of the most wanted materials in the modern world.
